...E.G (question 5 from paper 2C May 2012. KCHO/2C)

Calculate the quantity of electricity, in coulombs, needed to produce 18 cm3 of chlorine gas. *( 1 Faraday= 96500 coulombs)

Okay. LET'S DO IT. I'll do every single step (:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
1) First we must find the number of moles in the 18 cm3 of chlorine gas.
V=nmv ( volume= moles x molar volume)
18cm3 = moles x 24000cm3 <--- same units!!
rearrange it to get moles.
18cm3/ 24000cm3 = moles = 0.00075
2) Write down the half equation.
2Cl' > Cl2 + 2e'
3) Electricity always refers to "flow of electrons"
2e' ( 2 electrons) are need to produce chlorine gas.
2 electrons= 96500 x 2
2 e'= 193000 C
4) BUT what about the moles? just you wait...
now times the number of coulombs by the amount of moles calculated in part 1)
193000 x 0.00075= 144.75 Coulombs are need to produce 18 cm3 of chlorine gas.
AND all done!! hope you understood and this helped (:yalasivahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14021245541037994592noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5690887427829940237.post-459100582993113322015-05-23T08:32:21.104-07:002015-05-23T08:32:21.104-07:00This comment has been removed by the author.yalasivahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14021245541037994592noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5690887427829940237.post-2260758831381728412015-05-21T22:35:13.177-07:002015-05-21T22:35:13.177-07:00whatever it is,its value will be given in the ques...whatever it is,its value will be given in the question.manhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00390074271616172795noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5690887427829940237.post-54030476743406280702015-04-08T08:02:09.502-07:002015-04-08T08:02:09.502-07:00I thought it was 96,000??I thought it was 96,000??Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02565955466321075001noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5690887427829940237.post-85599182729404430552013-06-11T05:07:55.253-07:002013-06-11T05:07:55.253-07:00Oops :/ Thanks for pointing it out!Oops :/ Thanks for pointing it out!HannahHelphttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03691395988069139300noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5690887427829940237.post-68531468060494350692013-06-09T05:26:50.504-07:002013-06-09T05:26:50.504-07:00I just noticed, it's 96500, not 95600I just noticed, it's 96500, not 95600
alshehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12432238453177813085noreply@blogger.com
