Do we need to know these off by heart? Will we not be given a sheet of ionic charges with the periodic table we're given at the beginning of the exams? Thanks.

Not entirely- you should be able to tell each element's charges by their placement on the periodic table.

If the element is in group 1 it has a charge of + Group 2= 2+Group 3 = 3+Group 5 = 3-Group 6 = 2-Group 7 = -Group 8 = neutral
