2.11 understand the difference between hydrogen chloride gas and hydrochloric acid

Hydrogen chloride gas is HCl

Hydrochloric acid is hydrogen chloride dissolved in water. The two ions become detached leaving Cl- and H+ ions. H+ is acidic, hence the term acid.

    1. hydrochorlic acid is dissolved HCl in water, while HCl gas is HCL itself.

  3. The hydrogen atoms cannot dissociate from the molecules when a gas. Meaning that there are no H+ ions present, so it does not behave like an acid.
    However, when in aqueous form the hydrogen atoms can dissociate from the molecules. Meaning that H+ ions are present and so it behaves like an acid.

    Hope this cleared up any confusion :)

  6. Also got A* in all my mocks and the science were a big help because of this page. I basically wrote down these notes and used CGP book guide and revised them by sticking them round house and placing them in places I go regularly so its easy.

  8. When hydrogen reacts with chlorine, hydrogen chloride is formed. Hydrogen chloride is a gas, and has the formula HCl(g).
    When hydrogen chloride dissolves in water, hydrochloric acid is formed. This has the same formula, but you can tell the difference because of the state symbol (aq), which stands for ‘aqueous’. The formula is written as HCl(aq).
    Hydrogen chloride is made from molecules. The hydrogen atom and the chlorine atom are joined by a covalent bond. When hydrogen chloride forms hydrochloric acid, the molecules split into ions.
    HCl(aq) → H+(aq) + Cl-(aq)
    The H+ ions make this aqueous solution acidic. The solution also conducts electricity because it contains ions that are free to move.
