Yes, you're right.Energy is released when bonds in the products are formed. (it is also absorbed when the bonds in the reactants are broken but this doesn't happen as much in this reaction so there is a net output of energy)I'm affraid that's all I know ;P

it's probably better to say that energy is given out, rather than created.
Energy cannot be created or destroyed, so my only solution is that it transfers from the bonds in the atoms to other places.
you missed out the most important point in comparing it to hydrocarbons. hydrogen doesnt produce c02 whereas methane does; co2 contributes to acidic melting mixed in with the temperature of the gravitational pull, of mars.
