2.20 describe the laboratory preparation of carbon dioxide from calcium carbonate and dilute hydrochloric acid

calcium carbonate + hydrochloric acid → calcium chloride + water + carbon dioxide

CaCO3 + 2HCl → CaCl2 + H2O + CO2

  1. Hannah do you know what the laboratory prep is, like you did with the hydrogen peroxide one in 2.18, or is it the same thing that I have to substitute in the substances to the equipment into that one?

    1. Place calcium carbonate in a conical flask. Add hydrochloric acid in the conical flask and carbon dioxide will be released. Use downwards displacement to measure how much CO2 was made.

  3. ^ Calcium carbonate (in the form of marble chips) is added to the bottom of a conical flask, along with dilute hydrochloric acid.
The HCL reacts with the calcium carbonate to produce calcium chloride, water, and carbon dioxide gas.
The gas is then collected in a gas syringe or using downwards delivery. Hope that answers your question :)
