4.18 describe the effects of changes in surface area of a solid, concentration of solutions, pressure of gases, temperature and the use of a catalyst on the rate of a reaction

Higher temperature, more surface area, higher concentration, higher pressure and use of a catalyst all make a reaction faster.

  4. Increase in concentration =
    +Increase in rate of reaction
+more particles in a given volume
    +Particles collide more often
+therefore more successful collisions per second.

    Increase in temperature=
    +Increase in rate of reaction
    +Particles have more energy
+therefore more collisions have the required activation energy
+which results in more successful collisions per second

    Increase in surface area=
    +Increase in rate of reaction
+More particles in contact with the other reactant
    +Particles collide more often
+which results in more successful collisions per second

A CATALYST provides an alternative pathway for the reaction to start, which requires a low activation energy.
(Activation energy is the amount of energy required for a reaction to occur)

    Happy revising people!!
